Un Traité de l'amour se devait d'être un livre sur les catégories, les degrés, les formes, les vicissitudes de l'amour, sur la séparation et l'union, le désir ardent et l'extase, sur les représentations de l'Aimé, ses formes, ses métamorphoses, son insaisissable essence et sur les états des amants.
